I. Subways

North / South Subways Midtown East Side - 4/5/6 Along Lexington Avenue

  • Stops along Lexington Avenue include 59th Street / 51st Street / 42nd Street.
  • Stops along Park Avenue South include 33rd Street / 28th Street / 23rd Street and 14th St at Union Square.
  • Be careful not to board an express unless you want to [EXPRESS trains numbers are encircled in RED lights / LOCAL in GREEN lights].

North / South Subways Midtown West Side - 1/2/3 along Broadway / 7th Avenue

  • Stops along Broadway include 59th Street & Columbus Circle / 50th Street / Times Square 42nd Street. At Times Square there’s also access via 7th Avenue.
  • The lines continue down 7th Avenue stopping at Penn Station & 34th Street / 28th Street / 23rd Street / 18th Street and 14th Street.
  • Be careful not to board an express unless you want to [EXPRESS trains numbers are encircled in RED lights / LOCAL in GREEN lights].

East / West Subways in Midtown – S / 7 / L

  • The S train – which is the Midtown Shuttle runs directly from Times Square to Grand Central Station every few minutes during the day and with longer intervals late at night.
  • The #7 line comes in from Queens stopping at Grand Central Station, Bryant Park and Times Square – all along 42nd Street. They are in the process of extending the line to the Jacob Javits Center in Midtown West, but the opening date keeps getting pushed into the future.
  • The L line traverses 14th Street starting at 8th Avenue and ending in the Canarsie neighborhood of Brooklyn. The Manhattan stops include 8th Avenue / 6th Avenue / 14th Street Union Square / 3rd Avenue / 1st Avenue and then onto the Bedford Avenue stop at North 7th Street in Brooklyn.

Other Subway Lines In Midtown - A/B/C/D/E/F and N/Q/R

  • Subways coming in from Queens & heading south along Central / West Side of Midtown. The F train comes in from Queens and stops at 63rd Street and Lexington Avenue before heading south along 6th Avenue to 57th Street / Rockefeller Center at 47th – 50th Streets / 42nd at Bryant Park / 34th Herald Square / 23rd Street and 14th Street before heading further south into the West Village and lower Manhattan.
  • Subways coming in from the UWS & heading southeast. The B and D trains come south from the Upper West Side along Central Park West. They stop at 59th Street / Columbus Circle and then head southeast stopping at 7th Avenue and 53rd Street. They continue southeast to 6th Avenue stopping at Rockefeller Center at 47th – 50th Streets / 42nd at Bryant Park / 34th Herald Square – before heading down to West 4th Street in the Village.
  • From Queens & Into Midtown 6th Avenue North / South. The E and M trains come in from Queens heading west, stopping at Lexington / 53rd Street and at 5th Avenue / 53rd Street before splitting ways. The M train heads south along 6th Avenue with the B, D and F trains making the stops mentioned for those trains in the paragraph above – as well as at 23rd Street and 14th Street which the B &D don’t make.
  • From Queens & South Along The West Side. While the E train heads further west stopping at Lexington at 53rd Street / 5th Avenue at 53rd Street / 7th Avenue at 53rd Street / 50th Street at 8th Avenue. Then the E train heads south to the 42nd Street - Port Authority Bus Terminal on 8th Avenue and then makes the following stops along 8th Avenue – 34th Penn Station / 23rd Street and 14th Street - then heading south into the Village and lower Manhattan.
  • Midtown 8th Avenue North / South. The A / C lines stop come down from the Upper West Side along Central Park West. They continue south along 8th Avenue making stops at 59th Street & Columbus Circle / 50th Street / Times Square 42nd Street / Penn Station & 34th Street / 23rd Street and 14th Street before heading into the Village and lower Manhattan.
  • Southeast Along Broadway. The N / Q / R come in from Queens head west. Their stops include Lexington at 59th Street / 5th Avenue at 59th Street and 7th Avenue at 57th Street. They then head south to 49th Street on 7th Avenue. And then follow Broadway in a southeasterly direction through Midtown down to the mid / eastern section of the Village. Stops along Broadway include Times Square 42nd Street and then Herald Square 34th Street / 28th Street / 23rd Street and 14th Street Union Square.

II. Crosstown Buses Between East & West Midtown

There are crosstown buses on 14th Street, 23rd Street, 42nd Street, 49th/ 50th Streets and 57th Street.

  • ROOSEVELT ISLAND TRAM. The M57 starts at 72nd Street & Broadway on the UWS, goes to 57th at Broadway and then makes two more stops heading east along 57th before terminating at 60th Street and York Avenue on the UWS near the Roosevelt Island tram which terminates at 59th Street and 2nd Avenue.
  • The M50 starts at 12th Avenue at 42nd Street and heads east making two stops along 49th Avenue before terminating at 49th Street and 1st Avenue.
  • The M42 starts at the Circle Line Pier at West 42nd Street and heads east along 42nd Street making a stop at the Port Authority and two more along 42nd Street before terminating at 41st Street and 1st Avenue.
  • The M23 starts at Chelsea Piers at 12th Avenue and 22nd Street and heads east making four stops along 23rd Street before terminating at Avenue C and 22nd Street in the East Village.
  • The M14 crosses town along 14th Street beginning in the West Village at Chelsea Piers at West Street and 18th Street and ending in the East Village at Grand Street and the FDR Drive.

III. By Car

A. East Side: FDR / Midtown Tunnel / Queensboro Bridge

  • QUEENSBORO BRIDGE. From the FDR heading south, take exit 12 at East 63rd Street to highway 25 across the Queensboro Bridge. From the FDR heading north take exit 12 at East 61st to highway 25 across the Queensboro Bridge.
  • There’s a northbound entrance onto the FDR Drive at East 62nd Street.
  • East 53rd Street there’s a southbound exit only.
  • East 49th Street there’s a southbound exit only.
  • East 48th Street there’s a northbound entrance only.
  • East 42nd Street there’s a northbound exit only.
  • MIDTOWN TUNNEL. At 34th Street.
  • East 34th Street exit and entrances from the Midtown Tunnel – I 495 – Long Island Expressway.
  • East 30th there’s a southbound entrance only.
  • Exit 7 – East 20th Street / East 23rd to Village / Hospital

B. West Side: Highway 9A & Lincoln Tunnel

The Henry Hudson Highway becomes the West Side Highway at about 59th Street, and this far south in Manhattan it slows considerably, as there are numerous exits and intersections.

  • Exit 9 - Riverside South - West 72nd Street / Riverside Boulevard. Northbound entrance only.
  • Exit 8 - Ship Terminal - West 59th Street – interchange where all northbound commercial vehicles must exit.
  • Exit 7 - Hell's Kitchen - West 56th Street / West 57th Street interchange and no northbound entrance.
  • LINCOLN TUNNEL. ENTRANCE INTO MIDTOWN. The Lincoln Tunnel coming from New Jersey comes above ground just a bit east of 10th Avenue between 38th and 39th Streets. The Lincoln Tunnel feeds traffic into NYC heading south between 9th and 10th Avenues at 36th or 33rd Streets . And it feeds traffic heading north on Dyer Avenue allowing motorists to take 41st Street to southbound West Side Highway 9A or take 42nd Street west to northbound West Side Highway 9A. Both northbound and southbound can exit east to head across town.
  • LINCOLN TUNNEL. EXIT TO NEW JERSEY. The Lincoln Tunnel heading to New Jersey comes above ground just a bit east of 11th Avenue between 39th and 40th Streets. You can enter from 40th Street which is a one-way east bound street [so coming in from 11th Avenue] or you can take 41st Street west and turn south on Galvin crossing 40th Street into the entrance. There are also entrances on 31st and 33rd Streets [one-way streets heading west] between 9th and 10th Avenues. And off 9th Avenue [heads south] between 36th and 37th Streets.
  • Exit 6 – West 40th Street / West 42nd Street to I-495 west (Lincoln Tunnel) intersection for exit to Lincoln Tunnel for all vehicles.
  • Exit 5 – Chelsea – West 30th Street to I-495 west (Lincoln Tunnel) intersection for autos.
  • Exit 4 - 10th Avenue intersection for the northern West Village or southern Midtown.
