Midtown Neighborhoods - Manhattan Buzz Defined Boundaries
For our purposes the Manhattan Midtown neighborhood encompasses all of the blocks between the East River and Hudson River running from 59th Street along Central Park South to 14th Street. This differs from the traditional boundaries to the north which generally went into the low 70's on the Upper East and West Sides.
Brief History Of The Origins Of New York City Cultural Centers
Midtown has a long history, a summary of which we've included in the Midtown Neighborhood of this site [scroll down to bottom]. Essentially Midtown was farmlands and woodlands up until about the 1800's. The opening of the Erie Canal transformed New York City and it began growing quickly northward.
The NYC reservoir was where Bryant Park now stands and the Waldorf Astoria once stood where the Empire State Building now stands. Central Park was added shortly after the middle of the 19th century as the Upper East Side became dotted with Robber Baron mansions and the Upper West Side grew into a suburban like area of its day.
