Valentine's Day is less than a month away. Valentines Day is a good time to let your loved one know you care. Flowers, gifts and dinner are always welcome treats, and / or some thoughtful gesture that shows that the lady [or man] you're with, still means a lot to you.

This report provides a selection of various romantic and casual restaurants in which to celebrate Valentines Day in Manhattan. We also highlight a few local restaurant closures.

All restaurants that have been asterisked have either been updated or added in 2024. Those restaurants without an asterisk are from 2023, so watch the dates / year to be sure you're looking at 2024 specials.

Valentine's Day is on a Wednesday this year, so it may be fair game to make your VDay reservation on Valentine's Day or any day of the preceding weekend. Also, many restaurants have retained their outside dining capacity - so depending on the weather - NYC restaurants may have more capacity for Valentine's Day weekend than they did prior to the prepandemic.

It's worth reminding folks that there were a number of restaurant casualties during and following the pandemic, so it's best to do your research early. Valentine's Day History - Romantic Restaurants In Manhattan

The origins of Valentine's Day are not well documented. It's believed to have been named after Saint Valentine who was apparently a Catholic martyr who died over 1500 years ago. Today the holiday is not associated with religion so much as flowers, candies, cards and romantic dinners. And the holiday spokesperson is now Cupid, a Roman god of desire, and quite a mischief maker.

Many of the following Manhattan restaurants include links to Manhattan Buzz restaurant reviews. These restaurants were selected based the food quality, the ambiance and the service of these restaurants which made them notable within their categories.

This is not meant to be an exhaustive list as there are many more fine Manhattan restaurants we wish to review. But in the meantime this is what we have to offer.

All of these are likely good restaurants for Valentines Day, but one size does not fit all. Most of them have some romance, but not all of them are romantic rendezvous restaurants. All of the restaurants shown here are located in Manhattan, and I have visited all of them presented here and believe them to be quite commendable for either food or ambiance or both - within their price range and category. Valentines Day Specials 2024 _ They appear to be offering a special menu for Valentines Day [there's a button for it on their website], but it hasn't yet been posted. I believe they may still have outdoor dining, but this hasn't been confirmed.

Valentines Day Specials 2024 _ They have a prix fixe Valentine's Day menu for $72 per person. They are also currently running prix fixe lunch and dinner for NYC Restaurant Week for $30 and $45 for a two course or a three course meal, respectively.

Description. Cafe Luxembourg Restaurant is a well established UWS restaurant with a long history and good reputation for French / American food. The decor is French, Parisian bistro style.

Valentines Day Specials 2024 _ I didn't see any specials posted. They are open and taking reservations for the indoor and outdoor dining. BTW - Tuesday, January 23, 2024 breakfast returned after taking a vacation since CoVid.

* Unfortunately Cesca on the Upper West Side UWS at 75th and Amsterdam closed in 2020 following the arrival of the CoVid pandemic. See Friend of a Farmer below, which opened a new restaurant on September 20, 2023 at 68 West 71st Street, although it's not Italian like Cesca was. It's an American fare farm to table.

* Unfortunately Ouest on the Upper West Side UWS at 84th and Broadway closed in June of 2015.

* Water Club Restaurant - Valentines Day in Midtown Manhattan

Valentines Day Specials 2024 _ They are not hosting anything for Valentines Day, which means they're not open to the public on that day.

Description. This is an event space with a rooftop, which sometimes organizes special events. In 2021 they held a 4th of July event that was a big hit and may do the same again this year - but as of this posting, nothing is planned for Valentine's Day. They are located along the East River at the East River and about 35th Street. There is also generally a boat or two departing from the nearby dock.

* Tex Mex Restaurants Open for Valentine's Day Manhattan

Description. El Rio Grande is a Tex Mex restaurant in Murray Hill on 38th Street & Third Avenue in midtown. The entrance is between 3rd Avenue and Lexington on the south side of the street in the ground floor of a large apartment building. El Rio Grande serves killer margaritas, thick crunchy chips and a pretty good Tex / Mex dinner.

Valentines Day Specials 2024 _ No specials posted so far this year. That said, every Wednesday they host a happy hour at the bar from 12 noon to 7 pm.

• In 2022 they offered a special ala carte Valentines Day menu, with indoor / outdoor dining options with item costs ranging from $15 - $35 such as lobster, scallops, crepes and the like.

* Rooftop at the Royalton - Valentines Day Dining in Manhattan

Description. Rooftop at the Royalton was the Gansevoort a number of years back. The rooftop bar and restaurant offers worthwhile views and the food is quite good.

Valentines Day Specials 2024 _ I don't see any specials posted on the website for Valentines Day, as of this post 1.21.24. But they are currrently offering a $45 three course dinner for $45 for NYC Restaurant Week ending 2/4/24. To rsvp for the rooftop restaurant you have to call the front desk of the hotel using the number and extension below.

* REOPENED _ Casa Lever - Romantic Italian Dining on Valentines Day in Manhattan

Modern Restaurants in Historic Buildings in NYC

Casa Lever is located in the first glass and steel skyscraper built in Manhattan built in 1955. I used to work in the building and have dined at the restaurant. The restaurant offers fine dining and was quite good the last time I ate there. Following renovations in 2022 - 2023, they reopened and are considered one of NYC's finer Italian restaurants by Forbes Magazine.

Valentines Day Specials 2024 _ None posted. In 2023 they underwent renovations were temporarily closed. They reopened in early summer of 2023.

* REOPENED _ Loeb Boathouse Cafe - Romantic Restaurants Manhattan NYC

Update 2024 _ The Loeb Boathouse ceased operations in October of 2022. The previous operator said they could no longer make a go of it, post pandemic. They resumed operations in the Cafe [ONLY], in the Spring of 2023 and are planning to reopen the restaurant in March 2024 [this is a revised opening date from Fall 2023]. The Boathouse was a popular place and likely will resume operations at some point, but when and what restaurateur will win the prize, remains unknown. We'll update you when things become more clear.

* NEW _ The Weather Room - Rooftop Restaurants on Valentine's Day NYC

A Midtown Manhattan Elevated Destination Still Open to the General Public - Romantic Restaurants NYC

Update 2024. The Rainbow Room has only been open for private events for decades now. And post pandemic, Bar 65 was repurposed in the same manner, meaning that neither of these venues will be open to the public any longer. And then along came The Weather Room.

Description. The Weather Room is on the 67th floor of the 70 floor Rockefeller Center. You must purchase $34 - $55 tickets to go to the Top of the Rock at the url below, where you'll get a 360 degree view of Manhattan in the heart of Midtown. They describe a visit to The Weather Room as follows, "... The Weather Room pairs Top of the Rock’s sweeping cityscapes with elevated, locally-sourced casual fare like artisanal sandwiches, mezze plates, and worldly pastries. From 9 am to midnight, The Weather Room promises an only-in-New York skyview respite ...".

• Historically. Bar 65 was an exciting, art deco, historic rooftop experience. Bar 65 was nestled atop Rockefeller Center in the heart of Midtown, just across from the historic Rainbow Room. Valentines Day Specials 2024 _ 2022 _ They are temporarily closed, awaiting an opportunity to safely reopen from the CoVid pandemic [confirmed 2/3/22]. Pre-pandemic on Valentine's Day they offered a prix fixe three course meal for $110 including tax and 20% gratuity. Drinks were separate.

Bill's Supper Club Replaces Bill's Townhouse at Same Location

• Update 2024. Bill's Townhouse temporarily closed due to the CoVid pandemic in March of 2020, and then became a permanent closure either in 2020 or 2021. In March of 2022, the location was taken over by Christian Pascal, a co-owner of the Fish & Hunt Club. He renamed the restaurant Bill's Supper Club and it's reopened.

Valentines Day Specials 2024 _ I didn't find anything posted for Valentines Day and have generally found that they don't do Valentines Day promotions. But that said, if you're a cigar smoker, it's a nice place to spend some time.

Valentines Day Specials at Delmonico's in Downtown Manhattan. For Restaurant Week, ending 2/4/24, they are offering a three course lunch for $60. For Valentines Day they are offering prix fixe dinner from 5 to 10 pm for $195 per person, tax, gratuity and beverages not included.

Description. Delmonico's is an old Italian restaurant located in Downtown NYC in the FiDi neighborhood. It's one of the oldest restaurants in New York City, and is heralded as one of the restaurants that first brought fine dining to NYC. Update January 22, 2024. Sometime around / shortly after the pandemic began, there was a battle for the legal rights to the Delmonico legacy. There were four parties who ran the restaurant for about the past couple of decades, and post pandemic, they engaged in a battle for the Delmonico legacy and business. One side won the trademark battle in court, while the other won renewal of the lease in the historic building where Delmonicos has operated for over 185 years. The battle appears to have been won by the party that won the lease, and thus, after a couple / three years of closure, one of NYC's finest restaurants has reopened.

Valentines Day Specials 2024 _ For Restaurant Week ending 2/4/24 they are offering a three course weekday lunch for $60. So far I don't see any Valentines Day specials but you can monitor that using the urls below. The views are breathtaking, so it's worth a visit. They're open from 12 noon to 10.30 pm daily. And happy hour at the bar opens at 4 pm daily.

Description. Manhatta is a modern American fare restaurant located in the Chase Building in Downtown NYC in the FiDi neighborhood. They have beautiful views looking mostly north and east along the East River - looking down on the Brooklyn, Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges. Update 2024. Things aren't quite back to normal, because a large percentage of workers no longer go to the office daily. That said, it's estimated that 90% of companies will have their workers going to the office one or more days per week by the end of 2024. Update 2023. They reopened from the pandemic in March of 2022. The Financial District and Manhattan still hadn't yet returned to normal through all of 2022, although making gains as the year progressed. Now things are looking up for 2023, with NYC getting its mojo back.

Valentines Day Specials 2024 _ They're not planning a special Valentines Day menu as of this post. They opened a piano bar upstairs in 2021 where they used to give performances from 6.30 pm - 9.30 pm Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and charged a $30 minimum. As of this post they seem to have concerts far more often, at all sorts of times, and there doesn't appear to be a required minimum.

Description. Fraunces Tavern is where George Washington is said to have given his Farewell Address to his men following the end of the Revolutionary War. It's a good restaurant for a very patriotic Valentine's Day. Manhattan Valentine's Day restaurants near Wall Street in Downtown NYC.
