January Parades & Cultural Festivals in Manhattan NYC 2024

  • * Saturday & Sunday, January 6 & 7, 2024 from 10 am - 2 pm. This is the last weekend of Mulchfest. Mulchfest is an NYC Parks Department program to recycle Christmas trees and wreaths by mulching them and then either keeping the mulch to be used in NYC Parks or returning the mulch to the tree donor for them to use in their garden or house plants. The Mulchfest sites in each borough are: Brook Park in the Bronx, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, Tompkins Square Park in Manhattan, Juniper Valley Park in Queens and Cloves Lake Park on Staten Island.
  • * Friday, January 5, 2024 from 11 am - 12 noon, 47th Annual Three Kings Parade at El Museo del Barrio at 1230 5th Avenue between 104th and 105th Streets. The parade begins at 106th along Park Avenue, ending at 115th Street in Harlem. The parade includes camels, floats and music and is free.   • * Thursday, January 11, 2024 beginning at 11 pm, Joe Lovano & Shabaka help kick off Winter Jazzfest at Dizzy's at Jazz at Lincoln Center [aka JALC] at 10 Columbus Circle in Manhattan.   • * CANCELLED DUE TO LACK OF WEATHER _ Wednesday, February 7, 2024 - The Winter Jam is usually on the second Saturday of February from 11 am - 3 pm at the Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. This a winter themed event including skiing, sledding, dodgeball, ice bowling and other wintry sports. As we've really not had any snow this winter, the Parks Department has arranged to have snow machines there to provide what Mother Nature is no longer giving us.
  • * Saturday, February 10, 2024 from 11 am to 3.30 pm - Chinese New Year Celebration Firecrackers at Sara D. Roosevelt Park at Grand Street. Free. For details see - https://betterchinatown.com.
  • * Sunday, February 25, 2024 beginning at 1 pm - Chinese Lunar New Year Parade. Festival booths are on Bayard Street between Mott and Mulberry Streets. The parade route is as follows - Begins at Mott & Canal to Chatham Square to East Broadway towards the Manhattan Bridge, completing on Eldridge and Forsyth Streets towards Grand Street next to Sara D.   • * MIDTOWN _ Saturday, March 16, 2024 beginning at 11 am, the NYC St Patrick's Day Parade in Manhattan begins on 5th Avenue at 44th Street and marches up to 79th Street. The parade takes place along 5th Avenue from 49th to 57th Streets with the epicenter in front of St Patrick's Cathedral. It's more of a milling about in bonnets and Easter outfits, than it is a real parade. More like a themed costume party.
  • * SOUTH ST SEAPORT _ Saturday, March 30, 2024 from 11 am - 4.30 pm & 11 am - 2 pm - Spring Flower Scavenger Hunt & Easter Hunt & Cookie Decorating at the South Street Seaport. This series of events are organized by the Seaport Business District in tandem with participating businesses. Both events begin at 11 am, with the Easter Egg Hunt & Crafts ending at 2 pm in Seaport Square between Pier 16 & 17 [also Rooftop]- free & ticketed with rsvp. From 11 am - 4.30 pm there's a flower hunt aboard the 1885 tall ship Wavertree. Free but must rsvp as there's limited space.   • * MIDTOWN _ Monday, April 1, 2024 - The April Fools Parade begins at 12 noon at Grand Army Plaza at 59th Street and 5th Avenue and marches down 5th Avenue to Washington Square Park. The King of Fools Award will be given out. The event organizer, Joey Skaggs, informs us that this is the 39th year of the parade. This years theme is Democracy at the Guillotine.   • * NYC _ Monday, April 8, 2024 from 2.51 - 3.58 pm there's a Solar Eclipse in NYC. The peak darkening period is at 3.25 pm. Be sure to take proper precautions 1) in evaluating any eyewear you use to view it, and 2) if you do view it, do so briefly, as staring at the sun can cause severe eye damage.   • Friday, April 14, 2023 beginning at 7 pm a Greek Orthodox Church Trisagion Service commemorating Holy Friday and the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ with the carrying of the epitaphios through the streets of Gramercy Park in a candlelit procession. The religious and cultural event includes a procession from the Church of St. John around several nearby blocks, before returning to the church. St. John is located at 148 East 17th Street at 3rd Avenue in the Gramercy Park neighborhood of Manhattan. Various art, culture, history and architectural tours throughout all five boros of NYC. Free. They describe the event as follows, " ... MAS staff organize a fleet of volunteer walk leaders, to create 200+ FREE, in-person, virtual, and on-demand walks with over 10,000 participants ... During Jane’s Walk NYC weekend, the simple act of exploring the city is enhanced with personal observations, local history, and civic engagement."... Organized by the Municipal Art Society.   • * Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 11 am to 1 pm - Cannabis Parade. In the past the parade began at 12.30 pm, and marches south from 32nd Street along Broadway to Union Square Park.   • * Sunday, May 5, 2024 first wave beginning at 7.30 am & officially over at 6 pm - 5 Boro Bike Ride. It starts between Canal Street and the Battery in Manhattan, depending on the cyclist wave folks are in. And it ends at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island. This is an unusual street fair, featuring the works of over 150 artists and craftspeople. It's a two day street fair on the Upper West Side.   • Tuesday, October 31, 2023 beginning at 7 pm & ending around 10.30 pm - NYC Halloween Parade. The 50th Annual Manhattan Halloween Parade NYC in the West Village begins at Spring Street / Canal and 6th Avenue and marches north along 6th to 15th Street in the West Village neighborhood. The parade runs for three to four hours with the official end time at 10.30 pm. There are over 35 bands and an innumerable showing of creative costumes. The theme is Upside Down and Inside Out.   • Washington Heights _ Thursday - Sunday, November 2 - 5, 2023 - Washington Heights Jazz Festival. Four days of live jazz by 65 musicians from the neighborhood.   • Central Park _ Friday, November 3, 2023 from 5.30 - 9 pm - The Parade of Nations in Central Park will be followed by fireworks tonight as part of the NYC Marathon Festivities.   • Sunday, November 5, 2023 at 2 am - Daylight Savings Time. This is where we will 'fall back' by moving our clocks back one hour starting at 2 am Sunday, or before going to bed Saturday night.
  • Sunday, November 5, 2023 from 8 am - 5 pm - The NYC Marathon runners begin congregating at Fort Wadsworth at the foot of the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge on Staten Island beginning at 7 am. The Professional Wheelchairs take off at 8 am, the Handcyclists at 8.22 am, the Professional Women at 8.40 am, and the Professional Men at 9.05 am, with the last wave at 11.40 am. Staten Island is the starting poinit, while Brooklyn is the first leg, the Queens segment of the course is around the midpoint before heading into Manhattan, then north to the Bronx over the Willis Avenue Bridge, where they do a U turn by heading west over the Madison Avenue Bridge before turning south into Manhattan and Central Park.     • So you can do some math to figure out when to greet them in your borough. The fastest men complete the race in a bit more than two hours, while the average is 4 hours and 40 minutes. The midpoint is in Queens. The biggest wave of runners travel through Queens around 11 am, so you can figure out the rest. The weather is expected to be pleasant. Enjoy.
  • Midtown _ Wednesday thru Sunday, November 8 - 12, 2023 at various times - The Baltic Film Festival. At Scandinavia House at 58 Park Avenue in Midtown just south of Grand Central Station.   • Flatiron District / Midtown _ Saturday, November 11, 2023 from 9.30 am - 12.30 pm [NOTE the earlier time this year 2023] - The Veterans' Day Parade & ceremonies commence prior to the parade, ending with a wreath laying at the Eternal Light Monument in Madison Square Park at 5th Avenue at 24th Street. Then the parade steps off at 9.30 am marching up 5th Avenue to 47th Street, ending about 12.30 pm. Midtown Manhattan parades & street fairs Manhattan NYC.
  • South Street Seaport _ Saturday, November 11, 2023 from 12 noon to 4 pm - Taste of the Seaport - At Piers 16 & 17 at 89 South Street along the East River at the South Street Seaport. Entertainment, kids activities and about 40 food & beverage purveyors with proceeds going to "seaport public schools" which in the past they had specified as PS 343 Peck Slip School & PS 397 Spruce Street School - but it wasn't specified this year. Music, food & beverages and free admission. Pasteles are a Caribbean dish, which are a breaded packet filled with various kinds of foods.
  • Friday, Saturday & Sunday, November 17, 18 & 19, 2023 - Anime NYC at the Javits Center at West 34th Street and 11th Avenue in West Midtown. The convention is described as follows, " ... Anime NYC is New York City’s anime convention! A showcase of the best of Japanese pop culture in the biggest city in America, Anime NYC brings anime fans together for three days of unique exhibits, exclusive screenings, and appearances by some of the biggest creators in Japan ...".   • NEXT WEEK. Thursday, November 23, 2023 from 8.30 am to 12 noon - Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. This year there will be seven performance groups, 29 clown crews, 17 performers, eleven marching bands, six balloonicles, and 25 huge floating balloons. They start at the American Museum of Natural History at 80th Street, marching south at Central Park West, turning east onto 59th Street, before turning south on 6th Avenue.
