Summer has begun. A number of community groups in collaboration with the NYC Parks Department and frequently with some measure of various levels of government funding, have put together a summer full of films and free summer concerts in the parks. The free concerts listed below are designed for young and old alike and they're FREE.

Lincoln Center - Summer for the City Festival

Free Things To Do / Free Summer Outdoor Summer Concerts on the Upper West Side UWS of Manhattan NYC

Brief History of Lincoln Center Summer Programming. Prior to the pandemic, Lincoln Center hosted a number of free and paid summer programs. They included Summer Swing [jazz], Mostly Mozart and Out of Doors [eclectic mix], in addition to generally paid performances by the NY Opera and a mix of free and paid by the NY Philharmonic.

This year, like last year, all of the Spring / Summer Lincoln Center programming has been put under one umbrella / heading entitled Summer for the City.

First Come / First Serve Guidelines. Tickets are generally FREE, but entry to the performance is only allowed on a first come / first serve basis. Also the wearing of masks is encouraged, and hopefully by now most folks have been vaccinated. There are also paid performances for which you'll find tickets at www.lincolncenter.org.

• Wednesday, June 14 - Saturday, August 12, 2023 most days at various times - Summer for the City. Over 80 musical, theatrical and artistic cultural events - many of which are free.

• Tuesday thru Saturday, July 25 - 29, 2023 beginning at 5 pm and 7.30 pm - BAAND Together Dance Festival. They bill the event as follows, " ... See five of NYC’s most iconic dance companies—Ballet Hispánico, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, and Dance Theatre of Harlem—together on one stage as the BAAND Together Dance Festival returns to Damrosch Park for five midsummer nights! From July 25–29 ... a different program of pieces each night, featuring repertory favorites. Each afternoon, one of the companies will also bring its unique teaching style to campus with daily Education Workshops, appropriate for all ages...". Free. First come / first serve admission.

The NY Philharmonic is classically trained, while the Casita Maria BronX BandA is something of a Latin jazz group. I may not have this totally correct, but close enough. • Location. The Naumberg Bandshell is located just east of the Great Lawn, west of the Rumsey Playfield [just behind it] and south of Bethesda Terrace. Entry from both the Upper East and Upper West Sides around 70th - 72nd Streets is best. These summer classical concerts have happened every year since 1905 and they're FREE.

• THIS PARK IS BEING RECONSTRUCTED DUE TO IT'S PROXIMITY TO THE EAST RIVER AND LOW ELEVATION. It's become a part of the East Side Coastal Resiliency Project. The last event was held earlier in the summer of 2021 and thereafter programming ceased as reconstruction began. The Amphitheater itself was reportedly torn down in December of 2021. Stay tuned for updates, but nothing is expected to return in 2022. Stay tuned, as in future years, particularly after completion of the project in 2026, things will look quite different.
