East Village & West Village - Gotham Buzz Defined Boundaries
For our purposes the East Village neighborhood encompasses all of the blocks east of Washington Square Park and running to the East River and from Houston Street to 14th Street. The West Village neighborhood encompasses all of the blocks west of Washington Square Park and running to the Hudoson River and from Houston Street to 14th Street.
Brief History Of The Origins Of New York City Cultural Centers
The Village, as it is known today, was a potter's field in the 1600's, meaning it was a place where the unknown were buried. In the 1700's it was farmland with some homes in what is currently the West Village and where the oldest surviing home still stands. Around the turn into the 1800's, the area was becoming more populated and the city purchased the area that is now Washington Square Park and used it for militia exercises and parades.
After the Erie Canal opened, New York became a commercial hub and grew quickly. Tompkins Square in the East Village was given to the city by one of Peter Stuyvesant's heirs. And Union Square Park, which many associate with the Village even though technically it's a part of Midtown, began to be used for public rallies.
There's a pretty full history section in the West & East Village Neighborhood section which we put together using a combination of many different sources, including those still present in the neighborhood.
