Earlier this year I had an opportunity to take a break at the Davidoff Cigar store located in Midtown Manhattan. I have visited the store on several prior occasions, stopping in for a quick take out order of a fresh cigar or two. But on this day I had a bit of time available, so I decided to reward myself with an 'eat-in' cigar.

Davidoff Cigar Store - Men's Gift Stores in Manhattan

I like entering the Davidoff store. It's a tightly appointed men's store, complete with more than a full range of sizes and strengths of cigars. They also offer all of the accessories one might need to properly care for and to assist in the consumption of cigars, meaning humidors and ash trays and lighters and the like. They also offer other men's accessories like wallets and brief cases that match the quality branding of their cigars.

Inside the humidified cigar room I began browsing the selection. While looking through the cases, I started conversing with another customer who recommended a Dominican made cigar he favors. I was in a receptive mood to try something different, so I bought a regular sized, medium bodied, lighter tobacco cigar, which cost in the neighborhood of $8 - $12 [can't remember the price or name right now] and headed into the smoking lounge to enjoy my purchase.

The smoking lounge is at street level on 6th Avenue between 56th and 57th streets. As it was a quiet Saturday on a cool spring day, the pedestrian traffic was fairly light. During the weekdays and holidays it's bustling. The mood of the room reflected the calmness outside, as there were about a half dozen men, ranging in age from about the mid thirties to mid sixties, sat reading the paper, conversing or quietly staring into space contemplating a business deal, a family issue or the universe.

I spent the better part of an hour talking to the guy who'd recommended my cigar. We covered the family and kids, the job and what's doing in the world, both here and abroad. It was a pleasant conversation and I left the Davidoff store on 6th Avenue just south of 57th Street feeling pretty good about things and planning to make a return visit in the not-too-distant future.

I recently stopped in to visit Frank Adhami the owner and manager of Esquire Men's Clothing Store to get the buzz on what’s happening in men’s designer clothing for the summer and fall. 

Frank and Esquire have been selling men’s designer clothing on Steinway Street in Astoria dating back to 1982.  Esquire started carrying the Canali brand of men’s suits as early as 1984, when the Canali brand was just making inroads into the American market.  And Esquire has introduced many other European designers into the Astoria, Queens market since then, such as Hugo Boss in 1990, Versace in 1994 and Burberry in 2003.

The hallowed Black Friday has passed as we have assembled this outline of unique shops and shopping along the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

One of the great joys of visiting NYC is its breadth and depth of shopping venues. One can find inexpensive authentic ethnic cuisine and imported goods from around the world in the outer boroughs like Queens, and the world's finest haute cuisine, fashion, art and furniture in Manhattan. This report will focus on the options for Manhattan shopping on the Upper East Side UES in NYC, but also includes shopping venues on the Upper West Side, Midtown and the East Village.

First, let me say that this is not intended to be a comprehensive guide, but rather an introduction to a number of shops I have visited over the years and found to be either a bit unique and / or staffed by someone who's knowledgeable or personable.

Midtown Manhattan in NYC is home to a number of fine furniture stores. The stores range from the very fancy to antiques and used furniture.

So if you're looking for something completely unique, something very old or even some good deals on used furniture, the furniture shops in the Midtown section of NYC can likely help you find what you're seeking.

The shops we visited are located along Madison Avenue in Murray Hill, along Broadway in the Flatiron District and just north of Gramery Park along 23rd Avenue - all within a healthy walking distance of Midtown.

Furniture Stores near the Village & Midtown NYC - ABC Carpets

ABC Carpet has been serving the NYC market for decades. They're located along Broadway just north of Union Square Park around 17th Street.

They have an eclectic selection of carpets and furniture that ranges from modern to antique. They also have an instore cafe so you can relax a bit during a busy shopping day.

Furniture Stores in NYC - Rochebobois Madison Ave NYC

There are a number of furniture stores from which one can choose.  Rochebobois is an artsy design store located at 200 Madison Avenue in Midtown NYC.

They offer an interesting selection of artistically designed furniture for the modern home. Included in their collections are bed, living room and dining room furniture and they're conveniently located only blocks from Grand Central Station.

Modern Furniture in NYC - Restoration Hardware in the Flatiron Neighborhood

Restoration Hardware has an outlet at 935 Broadway between the Flatiron Building and Union Park just south of Midtown in NYC.

Their store contains a number of classically designed, country-style living room, dining room and bedroom furniture. Restoration Hardware has dozens of stores located throughout the nation.

Antique Furniture in NYC - Antique & Design Center South Midtown NYC

Just to the west of Broadway at 40 West 25th Street [near Madison Square Park] there’s a weekend flea market in the parking lot next to the Serbian Church.

Across from it, there is a place called the Antique and Design Center which is a sort of ‘shopping mall’ comprised of a number of boutique dealers of furniture, lamps, fabrics and art.

Johnston & Murphy - Mens Shoes - Midtown Manhattan NYC

Johnston & Murphy is a mens clothing store. They originated as a fine mens' shoemaker and over time broadened their offerings to include fine leather goods and then added clothing.

Their store contains a number of classically designed, mens' shoes, belts, wallets, jackets and coats. They are located along Fifth Avenue in Midtown and they have dozens of stores located throughout the nation.

J Crew - Midtown Manhattan Shops

J. Crew is a casual clothier. They offer a wide selection of clothing items ranging from casual and dress shirts, slacks and jeans, tennis shoes, jackets and more.

J. Crew is located along Fifth Avenue in Midtown and they have stores in various cities throughout the nation.

Coach Leather Stores - Midtown Manhattan Shopping

Ann Taylor - Midtown Manhattan Shopping

Ann Taylor is a womens clothing store located along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.  

The Ann Taylor women's clothing store offers a wide selection of womens' wear at generally competitive prices.

Midtown Cigars - Formerly J&R Cigar in Midtown NYC

J&R / MIDTOWN CIGARS CLOSED, BUT you can still find cigars at nearby Nat Sherman Tobacco Shop at the corner of 42nd Street just east of Fifth Avenue on the sourth side of the Street and their telephone number is 212.764.5000.

There are also a number of specialty stores in the area.  Cigar lovers will appreciate Midtown Cigar [formerly J&R Cigar] which is located at 562 Fifth Avenue at about 46th Street. 

They have one of the largest selections of cigars in the city / country sold at retail.  They keep everything well humidified, so the cigars are fresh and they’re also competitively priced.  The selection is one of the draws too, as they offer cigars from around the world and they have shopped carefully to bring you a ‘curated’ selection that’s hard to beat.

Sports Gear & Sportswear Stores in Midtown / Village - Paragon Sporting Goods

Paragon Sports is an iconic sportswear store located along Broadway, just off Union Square Park at 868 Broadway at 18th Street. 

The Paragon store offers a wide selection of sports gear and sportswear at competitive prices.

Bookstores in NYC - Barnes & Noble & The Strand

A 6 story Barnes & Noble bookstore is located on the north perimeter of Union Square Park.  Great bookstores are a rarity these days, but this one still qualifies. 

They have a café on the second floor overlooking the park.  And the Strand bookstore is located only a block south of Union Square Park at 828 Broadway and East 12th Street, so if you’re looking for books, this is the neighborhood.

For Food & Wine, Morton Williams Supermarkets and Morton Williams Wine & Spirits provide a modern organic, natural and standard food shopping experience and the wine store provides a nice selection of wines from around the world.  They’re located at 313 East 23rd Street.
