In 2009 they moved the Macy's 4th of July fireworks to the Hudson River on Manhattan's west side claiming they'd moved it there to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's discovery of the river. The Macys 4th of July fireworks display remained there until July 4th 2014 when they returned to the East River where they've been staged ever since.

4th Of July Fireworks In Manhattan - July 4th, 2018

The Macy's 4th of July fireworks will be lit upon the East River again this year. There will be FOUR barges this year, and they will be positioned in the East River between 23rd and 42nd streets on the Manhattan side - further north than the THREE centered around the Brooklyn Bridge in 2014.

In essence the expanded number of barges and changed location has the effect of expanding the viewing options for an audience estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands. The show will be more easily viewable from the shores of the East River including the East Village, Stuyvestant Town and up along Kips Bay & the Uniited Nations. In the past the East Village wasn't a good viewing location, because the East River curves west as it heads south toward the harbor, and the high rise buildings on the Lower East Side blocked the view. This year with the four barges and modified location of them, this is less likely to be the case.

Best Viewing Locations For 4th of July Fireworks Manhattan 2018

Blocks along the East River within local neighborhoods on both sides of the river will be cordoned off by the police. This effort begins around 3 to 4 pm in the afternoon and tightens up as the crowds gather. This is more true the further south and closer to the fireworks you go. The fireworks are expected to begin about 9.20 pm but you'll need time to get into position. It's also recommended that you forego the lawn chairs and other extra baggage to the extent you can, especially the later you move into position, as this will not just encumber you getting through the crowd.

FORMERLY GOOD LOCATIONS NOT SO GOOD ANYMORE [4 red flags at bottom of map below]. Looking at the red upside down obelisks, on the map below, from bottom left to top right you see a number of viewing locations that have worked in prior years BUT AREN'T VERY GOOD ANYMORE AS THE BARGES MOVED NORTH. The best viewing locations once included the South Street Seaport which was crowded and you had to get there early in the day to get in. The green space adjacent to City Hall at the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge WAS fair, although the high rises block some good measure of the view. Coleman Square and Martin Tanahey Playground have the same issue as the green space at City Hall - some good viewing spots & others not as good. Corlears Hook Park on the Lower East Side should be good this year.

OPTIMAL VIEWING LOCALES IN MANHATTAN. The next set of viewing locations are north of the Williamsburg Bridge and are new as optimal ones. In prior years the Lower East Side buildings blocked the view. But this year with the addition of the two new barges north of the Brooklyn Bridge around 30th Street these should provide a good view. These include the East River Baseball field along the East River and Baruch Playground, a bit south and a couple blocks in. And most of the rest of the markers are in spots along the East River, as most of them should have a good Manhattan 4th of July fireworks viewing location. Enjoy.

The 4th Of July Fireworks 2018 Returns To Jones Beach, Long Island

4th of july fireworks 2018 manhattan fireworks july 4 nycThis year there will be any 4th of July fireworks at Jones Beach State Park on Long Island. This was one of the New York State budget cuts beginning in 2010, which affected the deployment of police officers to provide security at the event. The Governor and the New York State Parks announced that these cuts have been restored and that the fireworks on Jone Beach in Long Island will continue this year, following their reinstitution in 2014. Please note that there's a $10 parking fee and after 4 pm there's a $10 admission fee.

Public Transit From Manhattan To Jones Beach

The LIRR leaves from Penn Station every half hour beginning around 4.30 - 4.45 pm and arrives in Freeport about 40 minutes later at 5.26 pm [5.35 / 6.05 etc]. From there you take the N88 Long Island Bus. The off peak one way train fares are about or less than $10 at the ticket office and less via the web and more when buying onboard. I believe a round trip package is available for about / under $20 per person. Jones Beach is a nice quick getaway from the city and based on hearsay from last year, not as crowded.

Please note that the ticket prices mentioned above are a ballpark estimate.

Fireworks 2016 In Queens - Astoria Park Was The Place To Be - On Thursday, June 30th

4th of july fireworks 2018 manhattan nyc july 4thQueens residents had a third fireworks option previously this week: the July 4th fireworks 2016 in Astoria Park on Thursday, June 30th. It was a near perfect night as the highs Tuesday were around 80 and the lows in the mid 60's, and no rain.

The Central Astoria Development Coalition sponsors an annual fireworks display in Astoria Park, generally around the end of June. The Queens Symphony Orchestra started warming up the crowd around 7.30 pm by playing big band music from the thirties and forties on a stage overlooking the East River in front of the great lawn of Astoria Park [between the pool and Hellgate Bridge]. While many Queens residents attend this event [it seems to have become increasingly popular over the past ten years], this year there was still room to throw a blanket, enjoy a snack or late picnic dinner and enjoy the show.
